Sainte-Luce-sur-Mer, as Told by the River
In Sainte-Luce-sur-Mer, the Anse-aux-Coques wharf has been transformed into an immersive pathway where architecture, light and the river come together to tell a shared story.
Created by Collectif Incognito, the project Sainte-Luce-sur-Mer, as Told by the River celebrates the municipality’s maritime identity, its heritage and the deep connection between the community and the St. Lawrence River. The experience includes a multimedia work projected onto the Sainte-Luce church, recounting the sinking of the Empress of Ireland, as well as a complete redevelopment of the public spaces surrounding the wharf.
At the heart of the site, a sequence of seven illuminated arches guides visitors toward the river. Their slender silhouettes, inspired by the sails of traditional schooners, create a striking passageway and a new visual landmark for Sainte-Luce-sur-Mer. As night falls, the lighting completely transforms the promenade and extends the experience all the way onto the wharf.
To bring this artistic vision to life, Jack World was responsible for the technical design, fabrication engineering, shop drawings, manufacturing and installation of the seven illuminated arches, a custom digital display structure and the tower housing the projection equipment.
Each element was developed to blend seamlessly into the overall site while withstanding the demanding conditions of a coastal environment, including strong winds, ice, humidity, salt spray and direct exposure to the St. Lawrence River. The arches were therefore designed as permanent structures combining architectural elegance, durability and integrated lighting.
More than a fabrication project, this installation required close coordination between the artistic, architectural, structural, electrical and multimedia teams. This collaboration was essential in transforming an ambitious creative concept into a durable and safe public installation that remained true to the original vision.
The result is a new gathering and discovery space that completely reimagines the approach to the Anse-aux-Coques wharf. It is a project in which the technical work fades into the background, allowing the experience—and the light, memory and river—to take centre stage.
